Everybody loves a good pilot movie, maybe because deep down, we all want to have the power of flying across the skies as free as birds. Celebrating the airing of Wings of Steel, a Czech movie about a WWII RAF pilot who comes back home, we have selected three great movies about pilots you should never miss.

The Aviator

Starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Cate Blanchett, The Aviator is an epic biographical drama film directed by Martin Scorsese. The movie depicts the adventurous life of Howard Hughes, an aviation pioneer and director of Hell's Angels. The film portrays his life from 1927–1947 during which he became a successful film producer and an aviation magnate while simultaneously growing more unstable due to a severe obsessive–compulsive disorder.

The Aviator was nominated for eleven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actor in a Leading Role for DiCaprio, and Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Alda, and won five: Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, Best Costume Design, Best Art Direction, and Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Cate Blanchett.

Sully: Miracle on the Hudson

Also a biographical movie, Sully: Miracle on the Hudson depicts the thrilling story behind one of the most famous aviation miracles. In the movie, Chesley Sullenberger has to perform an emergency landing on the Hudson River, in which all 155 passengers and crew survived with only minor injuries. The film not only depicts the anguishing moments of the event, but also the subsequent publicity and investigation.

Sully: Miracle on the Hudson stars Tom Hanks as Sullenberger, with Aaron Eckhart, Laura Linney, Anna Gunn, in supporting roles.

Top Gun

A classic of aviation cinema, Top Gun was the film that not only rocketed to fame Tom Cruise, but also the classic Ray Ban aviator sunglasses. In this action drama, hotshot fighter pilot Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, is sent to the school, his reckless attitude and cocky demeanor put him at odds with the other pilots. But Maverick isn't only competing to be the top fighter pilot, he's also fighting for the attention of his beautiful flight instructor, Charlotte Blackwood.

The film won an Academy Award for Best Original Song for "Take My Breath Away" performed by Berlin.
