Estrella Morente Presentation: Flamenco is a musical style that has been around since the 18th century. Estrella Morente is one of the young stars making sure that this music always feels new and exciting. A fiery Spanish spirit, Estrella Morente is taking flamenco to another level. With a unique and outstanding career, it is hard to not give in to her youth, elegance and unique musical abilities. Her debut album, Mi Cante y Un Poema, was released in 2001 to great success. Biography: Estrella Morente was born in 1980 in Granada, Spain. Flamenco runs in her blood. She is the daughter of the great flamenco singer Enrique Morente and flamenco dancer Aurora Carbonell, the niece of renowned flamenco singer Antonio Carbonell and guitarist José Carbonell, and granddaughter of flamenco guitarist Montoyita. Immersed in this artistic environment, at the early age of 7 she sang accompanied by her father with the master guitarist Sabicas.After sharing the stage with Chano Lobato, Juan Habichuela and Cañizares, and impressing the likes of Peter Gabriel, she gained acclaim with her Huellas de la Argentinita show in 1997 which established her as an artist. 2001 saw her recording debut with her album Mi Cante y Un Poema, produced by Enrique Morente and featuring tracks such as "A Pastora", "Coquinas", "La noche", "Alcazaba", "Peregrinitos"... Recorded in Granada, Cádiz and Madrid, it was released worldwide through Peter Gabriel's Real World label and it caused quite a stir when it took the flamenco world by storm and reached Platinum status in Spain. Her follow up album, Calle del Aire, reached Gold status in Spain and won her international recognition; a female singer who broke the barriers of flamenco captivating all kinds of audiences. In 2006, Estrella Morente worked with Pedro Almodóvar in the film Volver, singing the celebrated tango by Carlos Gardel. That same year, and after five years of recording silence, Mujeres (Women) was released, a collection of songs inspired by female characters beloved by Estrella and guided by the protective baton of her father Enrique Morente. With Mujeres –which also reached gold status in Spain– Estrella Morente went on to perform all over the world. Winner of the Spanish Music Award in 2006 for Best Flamenco Album, Estrella Morente has also received the Ondas Award for Best Flamenco Creation and was nominated to the Grammy's, among other important awards.
