King of the World (Koning van de wereld, 2006)
Director: Guido Henderickx
Movies have told many stories about what happened within the walls of the Nazi concentration camps and the many things that prisoners were forced to build. But who could imagine than a world champion would emerge from its rigor? Eurochannel presents the poignant and engaging story of a man who turns his life upside down to become the King of the World.
Directed by Guido Henderickx, this Belgian heart-pounding series delivers in five episodes, hours of gripping entertainment as the protagonists stumble across the burdens life has in store for them: unachieved promises, death, the mafia, and plenty of sensuality.
King of the World tells the story of a budding pugilist who befriends a boxing trainer in a Nazi prison camp and rises through the ranks while haunted by the accidental death of his beloved younger brother. When the moment is right the pair breaks for it and start a boxing adventure that takes them to fights around Europe and Cuba.
While the protagonist gets as much success in live and in love, he will soon be forced to reflect back on his life while questioning the many important decisions he has made to become the King of the World.
Towards the end of World War II in a German prison camp, boxing trainer, Max the Cigar (Jan Decleir), makes the discovery of his career. Fellow inmate, Stan Vandeville (Kevin Janssens), harbors an untapped, raw talent that could go a very long way in the boxing ring. But the road to success is beset with adversity. Surrounded by greed and corruption, Stan must rely on his own wits to survive in the murky world of rigged fights and unscrupulous bookmakers. It's a test of will as success in the ring brings temptation into a life of loose women and alcohol.
