The Unknown Islands (2009)
Portugal

Director: Vicente Jorge Silva

Presentation:

Eight decades ago, a Portuguese journalist ventured on an expedition across the islands surrounding his country. With more courage than recourses, Raul Brandão sailed to discover what was hidden in these paradises to share with his fellow countrymen in a book recounting his endeavours and findings. The Unknown Islands went on sale in 1926 and now, eighty six years after the original adventure, Eurochannel presents a thrilling homonym documentary to discover what has changed and what remains the same.

The Azores Islands, set halfway between Europe and America are still one of the best kept natural paradises left on Earth. In 1924, Portuguese writer and journalist Raúl Brandão left for the Azores on board of a steam cruiser. Armed with a brave spirit and collector of outstanding details, he went on to write one of the best travel books in Portuguese literature.

This modern adventure of The Unknown Islands is led by Portuguese filmmaker Vicente Jorge Silva. Following the steps of Brandão, eighty six years after his journey you will discover what forces lay, in the middle of the Atlantic; in a land of perpetual volcanoes, deep dark forests, blue lagoons and fearless whalers. Join the adventure and sail along with Eurochannel to discover the mysteries of the most paradisiacal islands of Portugal.

Episode 1

Faial and Pico, the island that created immense fascination in Brandão during his adventure across Azores and Madeira are revisited eighty six years after he first stepped foot there. Places steeped with historic memories and supernatural forces, where time has left indelible marks. This episode is a trip from Capelinhos Volcano to Pico Mountain.

Episode 2

Every adventure reaches a climax and for the grand finale across the Portuguese islands, Vicente Jorge Silva visits Saint George's Island, one of the most mystifying among the Azores. He also travels to Terceira to reconstruct the footprints left by the cataclysmic Angra earthquake. Some of the spaces haven't altered at all; others have changed beyond the point of all recognition for the travellers.
