Three Memorable Courtroom Movies

Celebrating the airing of the French TV miniseries Barbara’s Law, a legal drama starring Josiane Balasko, we selected three memorable courtroom films. They have gained a place in popular memory for their outstanding plots and award-winning performances.

12 Angry Men

Directed by Sidney Lumet and starring Henry Fonda, this classic Academy Award-nominated tells the tale of a jury of 12 men as they debate whether the defendant in a case is guilty beyond reasonable doubt. The drama has elements of film noir, as most of it is set in a courthouse, with only three out of the full 96 minutes of the movie shot outside the jury room. In 2007, 12 Angry Men was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”

The Firm

Directed by Sydney Pollack and starring Tom Cruise, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Gene Hackman, Ed Harris, Holly Hunter, Hal Holbrook, and David Strathairn, The Firm is a legal thriller based on the 1991 novel The Firm by author John Grisham. The movie follows Mitch McDeer, a young man from a poor Southern family who has struggled through Harvard Law School to graduate fifth in his class. When he is offered a 20 percent higher salary than the best offer he's received so far, he accepts the offer of a law firm but soon discovers that a mafia boss uses the firm to launder money.

The Devil’s Advocate

With remarkable performances by Al Pacino, Keanu Reeves, and Charlize Theron, The Devil’s Advocate is a mystery thriller film based on Andrew Neiderman's novel of the same name. In the movie, an exceptionally adept Florida lawyer is offered a job to work in New York City for a high-end law firm with a high-end boss - the biggest opportunity of his career to date. In the firm, he faces the dilemma of defending guilty criminals and saving them from prison.
